Split Fiction

Split Fiction, the latest cooperative adventure from Hazelight Studios, is set to launch globally on March 6. Known for their previous hit It Takes Two, which won Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards and has sold over 20 million copies, Hazelight continues its tradition of co-op-only gameplay with this new release. Like its predecessor, Split Fiction blends platforming, puzzles, and multiple gameplay styles across a variety of settings.

The game launches at 11 a.m. EST and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA app. Players can preload the game now, and PC users will be pleased to know that it is Steam Deck Verified.

In Split Fiction, players take on the roles of Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers who find themselves transported into digital realms inspired by their own stories. Mio writes science fiction, while Zoe specializes in fantasy, creating an ever-shifting world where players move between cyberpunk cityscapes and magical forests. The game’s mechanics constantly evolve, offering segments that range from platforming and puzzle-solving to shooting and stealth missions. One moment, players may be piloting dragons, while the next, they could be navigating a futuristic metropolis filled with flying cars.

One of the standout features of Split Fiction is the Friend’s Pass, which allows one player who owns the game to invite a friend to join them for free. The game also supports full cross-play across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

The story follows Mio and Zoe as they become trapped in a simulation by a tech mogul attempting to steal their work. Forced to cooperate, they must navigate their way through ever-changing environments while overcoming puzzles, platforming challenges, and boss battles. Their journey is filled with unexpected twists, including hidden side missions that introduce new mechanics and surprises. The game’s structure recalls titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, where level-specific mechanics are introduced and quickly replaced by new ones.

Josef Fares, the head of Hazelight Studios, calls Split Fiction one of their most ambitious projects yet, designed to challenge creative limits. The team has worked to refine each gameplay mechanic, making sure every element feels polished despite the constraints of a small team. Hazelight’s commitment to innovation and experimentation shines through, creating an experience that keeps players engaged with its constantly evolving gameplay and immersive storytelling.

Thematically, Split Fiction revolves around friendship. Hazelight has previously built games around strong central themes, focusing on trust in A Way Out and collaboration in It Takes Two. With Split Fiction, the emphasis is on how Mio and Zoe’s bond develops as they learn to work together despite their differences. The game’s narrative and mechanics reinforce this idea, requiring constant teamwork to move forward.

Hazelight Studios continues to push the boundaries of cooperative gaming with Split Fiction. Players can expect evolving gameplay and an immersive experience that keeps them engaged from start to finish.
