Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S enters 2025 with an extensive lineup of games and potential hardware updates expected to shape the console’s trajectory. After years of trailing Sony’s PlayStation 5, Xbox’s upcoming first-party titles and Game Pass offerings may provide the momentum needed to regain its footing in the gaming industry.

Xbox Hurdles

Despite challenges such as studio closures, layoffs, and rising Game Pass subscription costs, Xbox’s revenue increased in 2024, driven more by Activision-Blizzard’s financial contributions than by stronger console or game sales. Heading into 2025, Xbox’s success hinges on its ability to deliver a steady stream of high-quality games.

Game Releases for 2025

The year kicks off with Avowed, Obsidian’s first-person fantasy RPG set for a February release. Drawing comparisons to The Elder Scrolls, Avowed is expected to be a standout title with its rich world and engaging gameplay.

Another game release expected in 2025 is Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that combines id Software’s signature action with medieval weaponry. This highly anticipated title could arrive in the first half of the year.

The long-awaited reboot, Fable 4, developed by Playground Games, is also slated for 2025. This revival of the beloved British action-adventure RPG series has generated immense excitement, with fans eager to explore a visually stunning reimagining of Albion.

Other releases include South of Midnight, a third-person action game from Compulsion Games, and The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian Entertainments’ second major RPG of the year.

Game Pass

Game Pass remains a cornerstone of Xbox’s strategy. Titles like Avowed and Eternal Strands will debut as Day One releases on the platform, further increasing its appeal. However, recent price increases and tiered subscription models have sparked concerns about accessibility and sustainability. Microsoft’s goal of reaching 100 million Game Pass subscribers by 2030 remains distant, with only 34 million subscribers reported as of early 2024.

Hardware Updates

Hardware updates could also play a role in 2025. Rumors suggest a mid-generation refresh for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with improved connectivity and power efficiency. While unlikely to introduce groundbreaking changes, these updates could reinvigorate interest in the console. Additionally, a potential new Elite Series controller and more special-edition designs may appeal to dedicated players. Although an Xbox handheld is reportedly in development, it is not expected to launch this year.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, 2025 represents an opportunity for Xbox to address its long-standing issues and establish a more competitive position in the market. With an impressive lineup of first-party titles and the continued evolution of Game Pass, Microsoft’s gaming division must deliver results to justify its significant investments and regain the trust of its player base.
