Reports suggest Sony’s PS5 Pro is unlikely to support Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. As one of the most anticipated games, GTA 6 has sparked massive interest, especially with its record-breaking trailer. The Grand Theft Auto series has been closely tied to PlayStation, and rumors indicate that PlayStation has secured marketing rights for GTA 6. However, despite the release of the PS5 Pro, the console may not meet the high expectations for GTA 6’s performance.

Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry explained that GTA games are known for being CPU-heavy, traditionally running at 30 frames per second or lower. He pointed out that the PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the base PS5, making it difficult to achieve 60 frames per second if the base PS5 targets 30fps. This is not a GPU issue but rather a CPU bottleneck. GTA 6’s expansive open world, filled with detailed NPCs, animals, structures, and animations, adds to the challenge. Despite these limitations, GTA 6 is expected to look and perform better on the PS5 Pro compared to the base model, though the absence of 60fps at 4K resolution may diminish its appeal to some gamers. The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7 at a price of $700, which could affect its market reception, especially as it lacks a disc drive.

On the release front, rumors have circulated about a possible delay for GTA 6. Currently set for a fall 2025 release, some speculate the game could be pushed to 2026. Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij explained that Rockstar typically makes decisions about delays a few months before the scheduled release. For example, the decision to delay GTA 4 was made just four months before its original date. Vermeij noted that Rockstar may not decide on a delay for GTA 6 until around May 2025, given the complexity and importance of the project.

Vermeij also mentioned Rockstar’s commitment to quality, stating that the studio would rather delay the game than risk a flawed release. He suggested that Rockstar is not under pressure to rush the game’s launch since GTA 6 is expected to sell for years, with little competition. According to Vermeij, parent company Take-Two allows Rockstar creative control and is unlikely to push for a premature release.

GTA 6 was officially announced last December, with the initial trailer quickly becoming the most-watched video game reveal on YouTube within 24 hours. Set in the fictional Leonida, a version of Florida, the game features characters named Lucia and an unnamed male, speculated by fans to be called Jason. The excitement surrounding the game has been building for over a decade, and its release is expected to drive significant sales for both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, including the PS5 Pro. Despite internal challenges at Rockstar, including debates over return-to-office policies, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remains confident in a fall 2025 release.
