Recent leaks have surfaced showing potential designs and hardware details of the next Nintendo Switch, tentatively referred to as the Switch 2. These unconfirmed images, originating from a Chinese social media site and shared on Reddit, offer a glimpse into what could be Nintendo’s upcoming console.

The leaked renderings suggest that the new Switch will retain a design similar to its predecessor, featuring an 8-inch screen, an upgrade from the original 6.2-inch screen and the OLED model’s 7-inch display. The console appears to have a larger screen while maintaining a similar overall look, which might be a nod to Nintendo’s strategy of incremental improvements rather than drastic redesigns.

According to these images and a source who has been briefed on Nintendo’s plans, the Switch 2 will incorporate several significant hardware upgrades. These include 12GB of RAM, a substantial increase from the original Switch’s 4GB, and 256GB of internal storage, up from the previous 32GB. The console will also support HDMI 2.1, enhancing its output capabilities. Notably, the images show USB-C ports on both the top and bottom of the device, which could offer improved connectivity options.

The redesigned Joy-Con controllers feature magnetic attachments and revised SL/SR buttons, along with new front-facing player LEDs. However, there are discussions about whether the new console will use an OLED screen like the recent Switch OLED model or an LCD display to manage costs, especially considering the increased storage requirements.

The speculation around the Switch 2 also includes potential features such as a dual-screen capability, though this is still uncertain. The additional USB-C port could suggest functionality like connecting two consoles for a dual-screen experience, although Nintendo is known for maintaining backwards compatibility, which might be a priority for the company.

Nintendo has not yet confirmed any details about the console’s release. The current expectation is that the Switch 2 will be announced within Nintendo’s fiscal year, ending March 31, 2025. Some reports suggest a potential launch delay until early 2025 to ensure a strong lineup of first-party games and to address any hardware supply issues. Recent observations about Nintendo assembler Hosiden’s increased investment in production equipment have led to speculation about a potential announcement or release sooner than anticipated, possibly around September 2024 with a March 2025 release.
