Sunderfolk, a new tactical co-op RPG from Dreamhaven’s Secret Door studio, brings together elements of tabletop and video gaming.
This upcoming release, set for 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC, introduces a twist: players use their phones or tablets as controllers, offering a modern take on the traditional game night experience. The game supports up to four players who take on the roles of six distinct hero classes—Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger, and Rogue—each with unique abilities and playstyles.
Set in the fantasy world of Sunderlands, players work cooperatively in turn-based combat to protect the town of Arden and its Brightshard from the looming threat of corruption. The game’s combat system doesn’t follow a fixed turn order, allowing players to adapt their strategy in real-time as enemies appear. Outside of combat, players return to the village to upgrade vendors, improve equipment, and build relationships with the townsfolk, all of which provide additional benefits for future missions.
One of the standout features of Sunderfolk is its focus on accessibility and streamlined gameplay. By using mobile devices as controllers, the game eliminates the need for complex setups, rulebooks, and materials often associated with tabletop games. The game is designed to encourage players of different skill levels to participate, lowering the barriers for those new to tactical or tabletop gaming. The use of phones also allows players to manage their character’s actions, equipment, and even Fate Cards—an in-game mechanic that introduces unpredictability and strategic depth to each move.
Sunderfolk also leans into its social aspect. Its couch co-op design allows players to engage directly with each other, whether they are strategizing in combat or deciding who takes the next move. The game supports both local and remote play, where players can connect via QR codes to join the action on a shared screen. This setup makes it easy for friends and family to jump into the game, no matter where they are.
The story of Sunderfolk is driven by a mission-based structure, with players exploring hex-based maps to complete objectives like defeating enemies and rescuing townsfolk. Each mission contributes to the overarching goal of protecting Arden from external threats. The game is expected to offer around 25-35 hours of gameplay through its 38 missions, with replayability encouraged through side missions, different character builds, and various difficulty settings.
Secret Door’s team, composed of former developers from Blizzard, is dedicated to creating a game that brings people together, whether they’re long-time fans of tabletop games or newcomers to the genre. Sunderfolk promises a mix of engaging combat, strategic depth, and a cooperative spirit that invites players to experience game nights in a new way.
