Black Myth: Zhong Kui

Game Science, the Shanghai-based studio behind the hit action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, revealed its next project during Gamescom 2025. The new title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, was introduced with a cinematic trailer during Opening Night Live. The teaser featured Zhong Kui, a red-bearded figure riding a tiger, accompanied by demons wielding a massive sword. While no gameplay was shown, the dramatic imagery signaled a new chapter in the growing Black Myth universe.

The studio confirmed that the project is in its earliest stages. Developers described it as little more than an empty folder for now, with no release window in sight. Even so, the decision to spotlight Zhong Kui carries cultural weight. In Chinese folklore, he is known as the ghost-catching god, a protector who confronts demons and ensures the safety of the living. His dual role as scholar and warrior has made him a lasting figure in Chinese mythology, and his introduction hints at a darker and more supernatural direction for the series.

Although the reveal centered on Zhong Kui, Game Science reassured fans that Sun Wukong’s story is not over. The studio suggested additional content for Black Myth: Wukong may still be on the way, showing a commitment to expanding the series in multiple directions. The announcement not only builds anticipation for Zhong Kui’s standalone tale but also strengthens the idea that Game Science is developing a franchise rooted in myth and legend rather than a single release.

The mythology behind Zhong Kui adds weight to the announcement. Zhong Kui has been represented in Chinese art and storytelling for centuries, often shown as a fierce figure guarding households from evil spirits. His character provides fertile ground for storytelling that blends folklore with modern design, and the cinematic teaser has already sparked speculation about how his powers might translate into gameplay. These possibilities point to a project that could push action RPG design into new territory while staying faithful to its cultural roots.

The success of Black Myth: Wukong sets a high bar. Released in August 2024, the game was praised for its combat system, detailed environments, and cinematic presentation. It topped charts globally and earned awards, establishing itself as a milestone for Chinese game development. With Zhong Kui, Game Science appears ready to continue that momentum, though fans will likely be waiting years before the project reaches completion. While there is no official release window, the announcement alone has secured a place for Black Myth: Zhong Kui as one of the most talked-about projects of the year.
