Rumors are heating up that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is returning as a full remake. Several recent reports suggest that Ubisoft is rebuilding the 2013 pirate era classic with modern systems, richer content, and a possible release in early 2026.
According to leaks, the remake will remove the original modern-day storyline entirely. Instead, it will lean fully into Edward Kenway’s pirate life and add hours of new story content focused on his adventures across the Caribbean. The game is also rumored to include RPG-style mechanics with loot, gear stats, and a deeper inventory system resembling more recent Assassin’s Creed titles.
Exploration may feel smoother this time. Reports suggest that transitions between ship and shore will happen without loading screens, creating a more natural flow as players explore new locations. Although the overall map may remain close to the original size, smaller islands are expected to feature more side missions and richer activities. Story content cut from the 2013 release, including parts of Mary Read’s character arc, could finally appear in the remake.
From a technical standpoint, the project is believed to be led by Ubisoft Singapore with support from the Bordeaux and Belgrade teams. The game is reportedly being developed on an updated version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. This would provide sharper visuals, improved lighting, and better performance. Some leaks mention that assets from Skull and Bones might be reused to streamline production, although not in a way that players will easily notice.
The most consistent reports identify late March 2026 as the planned release window. Some sources specifically point to the week of March 23. This timing matches Ubisoft’s fiscal year schedule, which ends on March 31. A financial report mentioning an unannounced game set for that fiscal period has fueled speculation that the Black Flag remake is that title.

Hints have also surfaced from the creative side. Matt Ryan, the actor who voiced Edward Kenway, reportedly told fans they might have to beat the game again, which many took as a clue about the remake. During a recent collectibles showcase, a host hinted that something new involving Kenway is on the way. That comment sparked more talk about a new version of the character potentially debuting with the rumored remake.
Fans remain divided. Many are excited about updated mechanics and a renewed focus on pirate storytelling. Others worry that removing the modern-day storyline may take away part of what once made Assassin’s Creed distinct. Even so, interest in a return to Black Flag remains strong.
Ubisoft has not confirmed any details. Still, with leaks piling up from different corners of the industry and with a community watching every development closely, the possibility of a full-scale Black Flag remake feels increasingly likely.
