Newly surfaced screenshots from the cancelled version of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake are giving fans a rare look at what Aspyr was building before the project changed hands. The images, which appeared online after being discovered in a former developer’s portfolio, reveal early prototypes, weapon models, and environmental details from the scrapped build.
The screenshots show a mix of incomplete assets and playable test scenes. One image features a player character holding a Vibroblade in a gray-box test environment, complete with debugging overlays. Another displays modular weapon components, suggesting Aspyr was exploring customizable blasters that could be upgraded or modified. Other images include props such as server racks, crates, and machinery meant to populate the game’s interiors and give them more depth.
While these assets appear early in development, they suggest that Aspyr’s team wanted to stay faithful to the tone of the original KOTOR while integrating modern gameplay systems. Some icons in the interface even reference companions from the first game, like Mission Vao, hinting that the studio had begun adapting familiar characters to a new engine.
The remake was originally announced in 2021 with Aspyr leading development. However, reports in 2022 indicated the project had been put on hold after internal issues and delays. Development was later shifted to Saber Interactive, and Aspyr’s version was quietly shelved. Since then, official updates have been scarce, although Saber has stated the game remains in development.
According to MP1st, the leaked images appear to date from around the time Aspyr’s work was halted. They show only small slices of what was likely a much larger project, but the details still drew plenty of attention from fans. Many expressed excitement at seeing behind-the-scenes material from a game that has become somewhat of a mystery, while others felt disappointed that this version will never be completed.
On Reddit and gaming forums, some players speculated that Saber might reuse ideas from the Aspyr build, such as the modular weapons system or character design concepts. Others believe Saber will start fresh, especially given how much time has passed since the original remake announcement.
Although the screenshots are far from polished, they capture an early stage of an ambitious attempt to reimagine one of the most beloved Star Wars games ever made. Whether Saber’s version will retain any of these elements is unclear, but for longtime fans, the leak is a bittersweet reminder of how challenging it can be to revive a classic.
Neither Aspyr nor Saber has publicly commented on the leaked screenshots or confirmed their authenticity. Lucasfilm Games, which oversees Star Wars titles, has also remained silent on the matter. For now, fans can only speculate on how far along the project was before it was scrapped and what the future holds for the remake.
I should play KotOR…
So cool to see these early concepts – sad we’ll never play this version, but the ambition really shows!
I wish they hadn’t cancelled this!
Too bad we missed out, still hold the original as one of my all time RPG faves.
The original was so good and ahead of its time for console RPGs. Wish this could have made it over the finish line.
loved the original so this really stings
maybe someday
