Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition

Nearly twenty years later, Aspyr has released Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition, now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Originally released in 2006, Neverwinter Nights 2 was Obsidian Entertainment’s ambitious follow-up to BioWare’s beloved Dungeons & Dragons computer RPG. The game introduced party-based combat, deep character creation rooted in the 3.5 edition D&D ruleset, and a rich campaign set in the Forgotten Realms.

The new Enhanced Edition comes with the original game as well as all three official expansions, including Mask of the Betrayer, Storm of Zehir, and Mysteries of Westgate. These expansions bring more than 100 hours of content and offer some of the most complex and compelling storytelling seen in a D&D game. Mask of the Betrayer has received praise for its thoughtful narrative and emotional weight, often compared to games like Disco Elysium and Planescape: Torment.

Rather than a complete remake, the Enhanced Edition focuses on improving performance and usability for modern platforms. The game now runs smoothly on HD screens with better UI scaling and cleaner textures. Controller support has been fully integrated, which is especially helpful for console players and those on handheld devices like the Steam Deck. Performance on the Steam Deck averages around 60 frames per second, although battery life can drain quickly during heavy gameplay. One of the most welcome additions is cross-platform multiplayer, which lets players team up across PC and consoles to experience the campaign together.

Although it has been updated, the game still retains some of its original problems. The camera system and party AI can be frustrating at times, and the real-time-with-pause combat remains clunky for some players. Visually, while certain elements have been touched up, the overall presentation still feels dated compared to more modern RPGs. New players unfamiliar with the older D&D systems may also find the 3.5 ruleset overwhelming.

Even with its flaws, Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition is a solid revival of a classic RPG. The new features make it easier to enjoy on current hardware, and the inclusion of Steam Workshop support gives players access to an active modding community. Longtime fans will appreciate the compatibility with older saves and community modules, while new players have a more accessible way to explore a piece of CRPG history.

If you missed it the first time or want to experience it with friends across devices, this version offers the most convenient way to play. It may not be a full remake, but it successfully brings one of Dungeons & Dragons’ video game adaptations back into the spotlight.
