Ubisoft has officially confirmed that a new Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon video game is in development, bringing renewed momentum and energy to the long-running and widely recognized tactical shooter franchise. While the title has not yet been officially announced or revealed to the public, the project is being developed under the codename “Project Ovr” and will depart from the franchise’s usual gameplay format.
The biggest change this time around is a move from third-person to a fully first-person perspective. This will be the first game in the series to adopt a first-person viewpoint throughout. Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet described it as a “first-person shooter type game”, a pivot toward a more immersive and intense combat experience. The design reportedly takes cues from modern tactical shooters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Ready or Not, while retaining Ghost Recon’s focus on realism and team-based strategy.
Early development footage suggests a slower, more deliberate style of gameplay. Players can expect stealth-focused missions, coordinated team actions, and careful planning over fast reflexes. This brings the series closer to its roots, echoing the tone and pacing of earlier titles in the franchise that stressed methodical execution over high-speed action.
The game will take place during a fictional global conflict called the Naiman War. This new scenario provides a backdrop for expanded mission types and varied combat zones. Moving away from the open-world formats of Wildlands and Breakpoint, the upcoming title emphasizes tighter mission design and more structured objectives that prioritize tactical choices and varied gameplay experiences.
Ubisoft has also hinted that the game may include live-service elements. With Tencent’s backing and technical support, the game could receive ongoing post-launch content, community-driven features, and regular gameplay updates. However, it is still unclear whether features like battle passes, cosmetic monetization, or season-based progression systems will be included.
Internal sources indicate that the game could enter alpha testing by the end of 2025, suggesting a possible release in 2026. While development is still underway and details remain limited, many fans are already speculating about a reveal during an upcoming Ubisoft Forward showcase or major gaming convention.
Following setbacks like the cancellation of Ghost Recon Frontline and the mixed reception of Breakpoint, Ubisoft appears committed to delivering a more focused and compelling experience. If Project Ovr can balance immersive first-person combat with the strategic gameplay that has defined Ghost Recon since its early days, it has a strong chance of winning back longtime fans and attracting a new generation of players who enjoy tactical realism.
