After several years away from the spotlight, former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has reemerged with a brand-new project, introducing players to a very different kind of world than the sci-fi arenas he once helped define. His upcoming game, The Legend of California, is an open-world survival shooter set during a reimagined version of the California Gold Rush, blending historical themes with survival gameplay and exploration.
The game is being developed by Kaplan’s independent studio, Kintsugiyama, which he founded after leaving Blizzard Entertainment in 2021. Rather than returning to the fantasy or futuristic settings he is known for, Kaplan is taking players into a rugged frontier environment inspired by the myth of a “lost” or “mythical” California.

At its core, The Legend of California focuses on survival in a persistent online world. Players can explore forests, mountains, and mining areas while gathering resources needed to build shelters and establish a foothold in the wilderness. Crafting plays a central role, with activities like cutting trees for materials and constructing ranches, stables, and other structures.
Combat is also a major part of the experience. Players can take on enemy-controlled outposts, engage in firefights, and compete with others for valuable resources. The game supports both solo play and small cooperative groups of up to four players, allowing for flexible gameplay depending on how users want to approach survival.
What sets the game apart is its emphasis on immersion. Kaplan has long been interested in first-person experiences, and this project leans heavily into that perspective. The design focuses less on character customization and more on the feeling of being present in the environment, whether riding on horseback across open land or navigating dangerous terrain.

Early impressions have compared the game to a blend of survival crafting titles and western-themed adventures, with some describing it as similar in spirit to games like Red Dead Redemption 2 but with deeper survival systems layered in.
The project has reportedly been in development for several years and is expected to launch in Early Access on PC via Steam sometime in 2026. While no exact release date has been confirmed, early gameplay previews and livestream demonstrations have already generated strong interest, especially among fans curious to see Kaplan’s next chapter after his influential work on World of Warcraft and Overwatch.
With The Legend of California, Kaplan appears focused on creating a more personal and experimental experience. Instead of chasing trends, the game leans into exploration, survival, and atmosphere, offering a grounded but still imaginative take on a familiar setting. For players looking for a slower, more immersive kind of shooter, this new title could be one to watch as it moves closer to release.
