Fans of the iconic slasher franchise have reason to celebrate. A new Friday the 13th video game is officially in development, as confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con 2025. The announcement came from Robbie Barsamian, Vice President of Horror, Inc., who shared that both a new film and a new game are in the early stages of production. The Jason Universe was created to bring the franchise back to life for a new generation as it honors its 45th anniversary.
The upcoming game will be a separate project from Friday the 13th: The Game, which was released in 2017 and developed by IllFonic. While the 2017 title had a dedicated fan base, it eventually shut down on December 31, due to licensing complications. Barsamian emphasized that the new game is not connected to the previous title and will have a fresh approach. Composer Harry Manfredini, who worked on the music for several Friday the 13th films and contributed to the original game, confirmed he’s involved in the new project and mentioned that the developers are going for a more realistic visual style and a different type of gameplay.
Although few details have been made public, early speculation among fans has been growing. Many are hoping for a narrative-driven, single-player experience rather than a return to the asymmetrical multiplayer format. Some fans compared their hopes to the immersive design of Alien Isolation, where tension and fear build through stealth and survival. On Reddit, several users expressed interest in a game that dives deeper into the lore of Jason Voorhees and Camp Crystal Lake, ideally with modern visuals and AI-driven horror mechanics.
Another element fueling speculation is the inclusion of the 2017 game in the Jason Universe brand. Striker Entertainment, now working with Horror, Inc., holds rights to expand or revive that version of the game. This could mean a spiritual successor, a remaster, or simply a way to preserve some of the game’s legacy. Despite the excitement, no release window has been announced.
The new Friday the 13th film is still in early development, and the creative team seems to be working on both projects with a shared vision for where the franchise is headed. The legal disputes that previously halted franchise progress appear to be fully resolved, clearing the way for new creative directions. With this new game and movie in the pipeline, the Friday the 13th franchise is ready to slash its way back into the spotlight.
