A new Game of Thrones video game is on the way, with Game of Thrones: War for Westeros set to launch in 2026. Revealed during Summer Game Fest, the strategy game is being developed by PlaySide Studios and will be released on PC through Steam.
Unlike previous Game of Thrones games, War for Westeros delivers large-scale strategy and tactical warfare. Players will take command of the Great Houses, including Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, and the Night King’s undead army, to conquer territory, forge alliances, and eliminate rivals. The game promises a mix of solo campaigns and online multiplayer modes, offering both cooperative and competitive options.
The announcement trailer gave fans a cinematic look at the world of Westeros, featuring characters like Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen. One dramatic scene shows Jon Snow in combat with the Night King, losing the fight, and being resurrected. These heroes will be playable in battle and serve as key figures tied to each faction’s abilities and armies.
PlaySide says players will fight in iconic locations such as the icy terrain of the North, the capital of King’s Landing, and more. Each map will reflect the environments seen in the HBO series, adding strategic depth through terrain, defenses, and local advantages. Players can build strongholds, manage resources, and deploy a variety of units, including archers, cavalry, siege engines, and even dragons and giants.
The gameplay focuses on classic RTS mechanics, with a modern twist inspired by fantasy warfare. Battles are chaotic and fast-paced, with players able to build their forces over time or rush into conflict early. The addition of fantasy creatures and the option to control undead armies adds another layer of complexity. In addition to military decisions, the game will also include political maneuvering, with players able to form alliances or betray them to shift the balance of power.
Warner Bros. is looking to rebuild Game of Thrones as a lasting video game franchise, following years of underwhelming adaptations. Past efforts like Game of Thrones: Genesis, Telltale’s narrative-driven game, and various other titles failed to establish a consistent presence. With War for Westeros, the company is doubling down on the Game of Thrones universe, building on the momentum of HBO’s spinoff shows like House of the Dragon.
PlaySide Studios brings experience from a variety of titles, including Age of Darkness: Final Stand, which shares similar survival and tactical gameplay elements. The studio has previously worked on well-known franchises like The Walking Dead and The Godfather, proving its ability to handle big-name titles.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is still in early development, with limited gameplay shown so far. However, the mix of strategy, fantasy, and familiar characters has already generated strong interest. As the 2026 release approaches, more updates are expected, including potential additions of other major houses and expanded multiplayer features.
