Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla is getting ready to stomp back into the world of video games. Toho Co. Ltd., the company behind the legendary monster, is planning a major push to expand the Godzilla brand across the globe. That includes a big investment in console gaming. According to a recent report from Bloomberg Japan, Toho will spend about $100 million to develop new Godzilla video games as part of a larger $830 million plan to grow the franchise in films, animation, mobile games, and more.

This news comes at a time when Godzilla is enjoying a huge wave of popularity. The MonsterVerse films continue to bring fans to theaters, Godzilla Minus One earned an Academy Award, and the monster has appeared in comics, mobile apps, and several crossover games. Over the past year or so, Godzilla has shown up in Fortnite, Call of Duty Warzone, and even Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble. Still, these appearances have mostly been cameos or limited events. Fans have been waiting for a proper console game that puts Godzilla front and center.

The last time that happened was back in 2015 with the PS4 game Godzilla, which didn’t get the best reviews. Even so, it has become a collector’s item, with copies selling for more than $200. That says a lot about the ongoing interest in games featuring the famous Kaiju.

Toho’s recent mid-term report hints that more games are in the works. The company mentioned plans to develop digital games based on Godzilla and its popular anime titles. It’s not clear yet what style of game they’re planning. It could be a new fighting game similar to Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee or something with a deeper story. Some fans have suggested a game where you play as a human trying to survive the chaos, while others would rather take control of Godzilla and cause mayhem. Either way, Toho seems to be listening and thinking carefully about the direction they want to take.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 already announced and new consoles likely on the way from Sony and Microsoft, this could be a perfect time to bring Godzilla back to consoles in a big way. Game development takes time, so it may be a while before anything is released, but it’s clear that plans are moving forward.

Between new films, global brand expansion, and console games in development, Godzilla’s return to gaming feels closer than ever. While the details are still limited, the idea of a fresh take on the King of the Monsters has longtime fans feeling hopeful. Whether it turns out to be a city-destroying action game or something with a deeper story, it’s clear that Toho wants to bring something meaningful to the table. With so much momentum behind the franchise, Godzilla’s next step into gaming might be one of his biggest yet. All that’s left now is to wait and see what rises from the depths.
