Fans of Mortal Kombat 1 are voicing frustration following the sudden release of the Definitive Edition, which many see as the game’s final update. With no announcement of future Kombat Packs and no clear roadmap ahead, longtime players feel blindsided. Complaints have flooded online forums, with users accusing NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games of quietly ending support just months after promising long-term content.
Despite the backlash, Warner Bros. Games has released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition digitally for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The edition includes the full base game, both Kombat Packs, the Khaos Reigns story expansion, and every playable and Kameo fighter released to date. New character skins and classic Animality finishers are also part of the package.
Guest characters like Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Homelander, Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 Terminator are featured alongside new skins inspired by the upcoming Mortal Kombat II film. These include updated looks for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Kahn, plus a tournament-themed Liu Kang and a Van Damme skin for Cage with his voice and likeness. Additional outfits such as Wedding Scorpion, Empress Mileena, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 variations for Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot round out the cosmetics. The edition also includes 1,250 Dragon Krystals, the game’s in-game currency.
The bundle is priced at $69.99 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, and $59.99 on Nintendo Switch. Existing owners can upgrade for $59.99 or $49.99 on Switch, with all components available individually. For newcomers, the bundle offers an easy way to experience the complete package in one purchase, but for loyal fans, it feels like a rushed conclusion to what was expected to be a long-term live service.
Even with this content-rich package, the release has been met with disappointment. Many fans had hoped for ongoing support similar to Mortal Kombat 11, Street Fighter V, and Tekken 7, which received multiple seasons of content and years of post-launch attention. Some now say they are reconsidering future purchases from NetherRealm due to what they view as a lack of transparency and planning.
Warner Bros. has not officially declared the end of Mortal Kombat 1 development, but the Definitive Edition feels like a closing chapter. Whether it truly is the final update or just a pause before more content, the silence has left the community uneasy. The lack of communication from the studio has amplified concern, with many expressing doubt over the future of support and competitive viability.
Warner Bros dropping the ball again. Sad for the loyal fans. Guess its onto the next entry to this video game series
