PlayStation players can finally prepare to return to the world of Senua. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, the intense sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, is officially headed to PlayStation 5 this summer. Developer Ninja Theory shared the news on the first anniversary of the game’s original release on Xbox Series X and PC.
The upcoming PS5 version will include new features, although specific details haven’t been revealed yet. These additions will also be available on Xbox and PC as part of a free update. According to the PlayStation Store, the game will be optimized for both the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and players can expect immersive haptic feedback to bring an even deeper experience.
This release is a bit of a full-circle moment for the series. The original Hellblade launched first on PS4 before being ported to Xbox One and Switch. Long before that, Ninja Theory released Heavenly Sword as a PS3 exclusive in 2007. Although the studio was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, it hasn’t forgotten its roots.
“We have such incredible fans of Ninja Theory on PlayStation,” said studio head Dom Matthews. “We’re so pleased that we can welcome PlayStation fans back to Senua’s story.”
Hellblade 2 continues Senua’s journey through a brutal and surreal version of 9th-century Iceland. While the first game focused on her inner struggle and personal trauma, the sequel leans into grander, mythic storytelling. Critics praised the game’s striking visuals and one-shot camera technique, though some felt that the larger scale came at the cost of the emotional intimacy that made the original so impactful. Still, moments of raw humanity are woven into the narrative, showing Senua at her most vulnerable.
Microsoft has been bringing more of its former exclusives to PlayStation, and Hellblade 2 is the latest to make the jump. Over the past year, games like Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have made the leap to Sony’s console. Earlier this month, The Coalition announced that Gears of War: Reloaded will launch on PS5 in August, bringing that franchise to PlayStation for the first time.
Although Ninja Theory hasn’t confirmed a specific release date yet, the excitement is already building. In the comments of the announcement trailer, fans welcomed the news and expressed hope for a physical edition of the game. Whether or not that happens, PlayStation players can finally look forward to experiencing Senua’s next chapter for themselves this summer.
