Bungie, the studio behind one of gaming’s most influential franchises in Halo and the long-running Destiny series, is preparing to show players what comes next. The developer’s upcoming project, Marathon, is expected to receive further reveals following its initial gameplay debut in April. Bungie will continue to share new details ahead of its planned March 2026 release. The game puts Bungie in the extraction shooter genre, with PvP at its core.

For many players, Bungie Studios is closely tied to Halo, the series that helped define console first-person shooters in the early 2000s. After parting ways with Microsoft, Bungie went on to create Destiny, blending shooter mechanics with shared world elements and live service updates. That experience now feeds directly into Marathon, a game built around tension, player choice, and high-risk encounters.

Marathon revives the name of Bungie’s earlier 1990s franchise but reimagines it as a modern sci-fi extraction shooter. Players take on the role of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries dropped into hostile zones on the distant world of Tau Ceti IV. The objective is straightforward: Enter the map, gather valuable loot, complete objectives, and escape alive. Survival, however, is never guaranteed.

PvP sits at the heart of Marathon’s design. Each match places players against rival teams competing for the same resources while also facing AI enemies and environmental threats. Any gear collected during a run is lost if a player is eliminated, raising the stakes of every encounter. Knowing when to push forward, hold back, or extract can be the difference between success and starting over.

Recent previews and developer updates have outlined how Bungie plans to support the game after launch. Marathon is set to release as a premium title rather than a free-to-play experience, with ongoing updates, seasonal content, and reward tracks that do not expire. Features such as proximity chat and solo queue options are intended to support a range of playstyles and create more dynamic encounters.

The game’s visual style has also attracted attention. Marathon uses a bold, stylized sci-fi look that separates it from many other extraction shooters on the market. Environmental details, including signs of recent player activity, are designed to help players read the battlefield and anticipate danger without relying solely on interface cues.

Marathon has been in development for several years and has faced intense scrutiny as Bungie navigates changes within the studio and a crowded shooter landscape. Even so, anticipation remains high. For Bungie, Marathon is the next chapter in its shooter legacy as the studio prepares to see whether it can once again set the tone for a new generation of players.

I really hope the best for you. I like the fact you not only have the pvp but also have the solo player. The short video was a let down though, just a player run I get, but he did nothing until the end, he got shot it seamed. It looked like a game of a man that ran got shot and that was it, new game. Then the shooter didn’t even look alien, more Asian I would say, not what I was looking for.
