Rumors Point to PlayStation 6 Handheld Hybrid in Development

PlayStation

Sony may be preparing to re-enter the handheld gaming market with a rumored hybrid PlayStation device. Early leaks suggest the company may be planning a system that combines portable play with a dockable setup similar to the Nintendo Switch, offering gamers greater flexibility and convenience both at home and on the go.

The device, reportedly codenamed Canis, may use an AMD APU featuring Zen 6C and Zen 6 Low-Power cores with a 16-Compute Unit RDNA 5 GPU. In handheld mode, the GPU is rumored to operate at 1.2 GHz, with the capability to boost up to 1.65 GHz when docked, thereby delivering higher performance on a connected display.

There is still uncertainty around memory. Some leaks mention a possible 48 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, though analysts believe a more practical range would be 24 to 32 GB, depending on production choices. Other rumored features include touchscreen support, haptic feedback, expandable storage through a microSD slot, and even M.2 expansion.

The timeline for launch points to mid-2027 through fall 2027, which would be consistent with Sony’s typical hardware release cycle. Price speculation ranges from $399 to $499. Analysts say that while this price range sounds appealing, the hardware described may be difficult to deliver without higher costs.

PlayStation Vita

Industry observers see the device as a direct competitor to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and other handheld platforms expected in the next few years. Sony has not released a true handheld console since the PlayStation Vita, and its most recent portable product, the PlayStation Portal, was limited to game streaming and received mixed reactions from fans. A fully independent handheld system could give Sony a strong position in the growing portable gaming market.

Still, not everyone is convinced the reported specifications will make it to production. While the leaks come from sources with some accuracy in the past, critics argue that Sony is unlikely to release such cutting-edge components at a consumer-friendly price point. Some suggest the final product may scale back the rumored power in favor of affordability and efficiency.

If the PlayStation 6 handheld does become reality, it would be a different approach for Sony’s hardware strategy. By blending portability with console-level performance, the company can offer a system that appeals to both long-time handheld fans and players seeking new ways to experience high-end PlayStation games. For now, the rumors have created excitement across the gaming community, but confirmation will have to wait until Sony officially unveils its plans.

I feel like next gen consoles will need a full fledged handle held option to remain competitive with direction PC gaming is going with the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally.

I haven’t even had a chance to play the PS5. So many platforms are going handheld and following other developers. We already are all digital. I got on board with the PSP and the uniqueness in portable game features was very gimmicky at the time. The market is ripe for a new development to hit the scene. Let’s see what will time bring. 2027 is coming fast.
