Electronic Arts has laid off employees across several studios working on the Battlefield franchise, even though the newest game in the long-running shooter series, Battlefield 6, has performed well.

The layoffs were first reported by gaming outlets, including Engadget and IGN, and were later confirmed by Electronic Arts. The company said the staffing cuts are part of an internal restructuring meant to better organize the teams working on Battlefield.

EA did not say how many employees were affected. Reports indicate the cuts reached several teams that make up what the company calls Battlefield Studios. These include developers at DICE, Criterion Games, Ripple Effect Studios, and Motive Studios, all of which help build different parts of the Battlefield series.

In a statement shared with media outlets, EA said the changes are meant to improve coordination across the franchise. Battlefield games are now built through a collaborative system where several studios work together on different parts of development, such as multiplayer systems, story elements, and ongoing live service updates.

The layoffs come not long after the release of the newest Battlefield title, which drew strong player interest shortly after launch. Early sales and player engagement were considered encouraging for the series, especially after the mixed response to Battlefield 2042 when it launched in 2021.

Even with that momentum, industry analysts say layoffs after a game launches are not uncommon. Large games often require bigger teams during development. After release, when work begins changing toward updates and long-term support, companies sometimes reorganize teams or reduce staff.

Electronic Arts has leaned on a multi-studio approach for Battlefield in recent years. The model allows several teams to work at the same time on different parts of a game and on future content. DICE has traditionally led development of the series, while studios such as Criterion and Ripple Effect have supported multiplayer features, gameplay systems, and technical development.

The staffing cuts also come during a difficult period for the video game industry. Since 2023, thousands of developers across many companies have lost their jobs as publishers reevaluate budgets and development timelines. Rising development costs and longer production cycles have pushed companies to focus more heavily on their largest and most reliable franchises.

Battlefield remains one of EA’s major series alongside EA Sports FC, Apex Legends, and The Sims. The company has said it plans to continue investing in the long-term future of the Battlefield brand.

While EA has not announced any changes to upcoming Battlefield projects, the layoffs show how quickly development teams can be reorganized as companies respond to changing priorities across the industry.
