Interactive displays guide visitors through the game’s evolution, showing how PAC-MAN grew from a yellow dot chomping pellets into a familiar face across TV, music, advertising, and merchandise. The exhibit captures the spirit of the 1980s while connecting it to the present day and the game’s lasting legacy. Whether you’re revisiting childhood memories or discovering the game for the first time, the gallery offers something fun, meaningful, and engaging for everyone.

PAC-MAN was released in 1980 by Namco and designed by Toru Iwatani. At the time, most arcade games focused on shooting or sports. Iwatani wanted to create a game that would appeal to a broader audience, especially women and families. The idea came to him while eating pizza. One slice missing from the pie gave him the shape for the game’s character. Simple yet unique, PAC-MAN became an instant and unexpected hit.

The game was easy to play but hard to master. Players guided PAC-MAN through a maze, eating dots and avoiding ghosts. With its bright colors, catchy sounds, charming design, and nonviolent concept, the game stood out. PAC-MAN attracted players who had never been interested in video games before. It quickly spread across the globe, inspiring toys, cartoons, clothing, and even a hit song. Today, PAC-MAN is recognized around the world and holds the record as the most successful coin-operated arcade game in history.

To go along with the exhibit, the PAC-MAN Pixel Drawing and Collage workshop will take place on May 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Great Park Studio. This free, drop-in event invites participants to create pixel art inspired by the classic game. All materials will be provided, and no experience is needed. It’s a chance to explore the creative side of video game design, engage with other fans, and make something fun to take home.

The exhibit and workshop celebrate more than a game. They reflect how PAC-MAN has entertained, connected, and inspired millions across generations. After 45 years, PAC-MAN remains just as recognizable and loved as ever.

Playing Pac-Man is a memorable part of my childhood. My late great grandmother used to enjoy playing it as well. I bought Pac-Man games on PS4 so I still enjoy it as much as I did when I was little. Happy 45th birthday!
